{"id":91474,"date":"2024-01-19T04:53:08","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T04:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.estaql.com\/japan-to-launch-moon-sniper-for-precision-lunar-landing-science-tech-news\/"},"modified":"2024-01-19T04:53:08","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T04:53:08","slug":"japan-to-launch-moon-sniper-for-precision-lunar-landing-science-tech-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/estaql.com\/seo\/japan-to-launch-moon-sniper-for-precision-lunar-landing-science-tech-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan to launch &#8216;moon sniper&#8217; for &#8216;precision&#8217; lunar landing | Science &#038; Tech News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h2>Japan to launch &#8216;moon sniper&#8217; for &#8216;precision&#8217; lunar landing | Science &#038; Tech News<\/h2>\n<p>Japan to launch &#8216;moon sniper&#8217; for &#8216;precision&#8217; lunar landing | Science &#038; Tech News<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/01\/70x70\/skynews-japan-moon-lander_6426178.jpg?20240119021102\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"sdc-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Japan hopes it is about to join an exclusive club of just four other nations that have successfully executed a &#8220;soft&#8221; landing on the moon.<\/p>\n<p>Its garden shed-sized Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, or SLIM, isn&#8217;t the biggest, or most ambitious robotic mission to our satellite &#8211; but it&#8217;s bidding to be the most precise when it launches today.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s space agency, JAXA, knows it won&#8217;t be easy.<\/p>\n<p>The moon gained new craters in the last six months thanks to a Russian, then Japanese robotic mission failing to stick the landing.<\/p>\n<p>Only yesterday an <strong>American moon probe<\/strong> crashed back to Earth after failing to make it to the <strong>moon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The final phase of the landing, as the moon&#8217;s gravity grabs hold of SLIM as it descends to the surface, &#8220;is expected to be a breathless, numbing 20 minutes of terror&#8221;, said Kushiki Kenji, sub-project manager of the SLIM mission.<\/p>\n<p>Nicknamed &#8220;moon sniper&#8221; by JAXA, SLIM is aiming to touch down in an area about the same size as Trafalgar Square.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Japan&#8217;s SLIM is roughly the same size as a garden shed<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>That might not sound impressive &#8211; but <strong>NASA&#8217;s<\/strong> Apollo landers targeted areas several kilometres across &#8211; even recent robot missions have lacked the ability to choose their landing zone and manoeuvre to it with much accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>SLIM uses technology and experience gained from JAXA&#8217;s daredevil mission Hyabusa2 which successfully landed on asteroid Ryugu in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s loaded with images of the moon&#8217;s surface from various lunar orbiting spacecraft to give it highly accurate data to select its landing site and precision radar navigation to help find it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<br \/>Mysterious new object found in Milky Way<br \/>Scientists discover oldest black hole ever<br \/>Astronomers produce significant star cluster image<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>JAXA says a successful landing takes moon missions from the era of &#8220;landing where we can&#8221; to &#8220;landing where we want&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Japan lacks the financial and rocket-launching heft of the US, China, the former USSR and now <strong>India<\/strong> which have all made successful soft moon landings.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s hoping a host of new technologies on SLIM, from lightweight ceramic rocket thrusters to computer vision algorithms, will give it a competitive edge in lightweight precision.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also deploying two highly experimental &#8220;rovers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A jack-in-the-box type probe is designed to bunny hop across the lunar surface.
