Russia\u2019s Supreme Court has issued a ban on the activities of the \u2018international LGBTQ movement\u2019 in the latest crackdown on gay, lesbian and transgender rights in the country.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Russia\u2019s Supreme Court has ruled that LGBTQ activists should be designated as \u201cextremists\u201d, in a move that representatives of gay and transgender people fear will lead to arrests and prosecutions.<\/p>\n The court ruled on Thursday that \u201cthe international LGBT public movement and its subdivisions\u201d were extremist, and issued a \u201cban on its activities on the territory of Russia\u201d.<\/p>\n The move is the most drastic step in the decade-long crackdown on LGBTQ rights in Russia\u00a0unleashed under President Vladimir Putin, who has put \u201ctraditional family values\u201d at the cornerstone of his rule.<\/p>\n The ruling, which the judge said would be effective immediately, did not specify whether certain individuals or organisations would be affected.<\/p>\n The hearing took place behind closed doors and without any defence present, Russian media reported ahead of the verdict. Reporters were allowed in to hear the decision.<\/p>\n The Supreme Court took about five hours to issue its ruling, after opening its session at 10am (07:00 GMT).<\/p>\n Putin\u2019s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters before the court decision was announced that the Kremlin was \u201cnot following\u201d the case and had no comment on it.<\/p>\n \u201cOne day, it will be over but for now, we need to try to continue to live and save ourselves,\u201d the Feminist Anti-War Resistance, which is critical of Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, said on social media in response to the verdict.<\/p>\n Other NGOs, including transgender rights group \u201cCenter T\u201d, said they would publish safety guidelines for members of the LGBTQ community.<\/p>\n Its director, Yan Dvorkin, who fled Russia citing security concerns, called the legal proceeding a \u201cnew low point of insanity\u201d.<\/p>\n Moscow\u2019s\u00a0crackdown\u00a0against liberal-leaning groups has intensified since\u00a0Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine\u00a0last year, which has seen the LBGTQ community in the country face increasing\u00a0curtailment of their rights.<\/p>\n The Kremlin has since ramped up its rhetoric about protecting \u201ctraditional values\u201d from what it called the West\u2019s \u201cdegrading\u201d influence.<\/p>\n Dvorkin said he believed LGBTQ people were being used as scapegoats by Russian authorities.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re losing the war. This makes people very frustrated and dissatisfied with the government.
