Discman, Tamagotchi, and Game Boy have in common?\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" They\u2019re all landmark Japanese inventions from the 80s and 90s, symbols of an era when the Asian nation was a world leader in tech innovation.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_04B406B0-D475-0A85-90D1-79E547A9E947@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      But with the rise of Silicon Valley, and American tech giants such as Google and Apple, has seen Japan produce less era-defining tech over the past two decades.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_68DFEE7A-4E07-458E-5D08-74DACE87B219@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      That, says Professor Masahiko Tsukamoto, of Kobe University\u2019s Graduate School of Engineering, is about to change thanks to a new generation of young entrepreneurs, an uptick in international collaborations, and new partnerships with university scientists.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_AFACD7FF-1EFB-DFFD-4A40-79B763BC9631@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Japan\u2019s focus this time around is not on smart phones or gaming, but wearable chairs, smart glasses and dog communication devices.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6AC50A85-EB51-AA86-4D86-79B763BCC94D@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      In short, wacky wearable tech.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_0F5DA13A-AAC0-03E0-4F6C-79C548860595@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      In 2013, Japan sold 530,000 units of wearable tech devices, according to Yano Research Institute.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_1EA666D5-74E1-C46A-D951-79C5B90D6545@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      That figure is predicted to leapfrog to 13.1 million units in 2017.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6FCB5DED-6E55-3FAB-6028-74CD61D6038F@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Perhaps the best indication of the boom in this industry was the introduction of Tokyo\u2019s first Wearable Expo in 2015<strong> <\/strong>\u2013 at launch, it was the largest wearable tech fair in the world with 103 exhibitors.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C7E69519-AA5F-9CE7-A76F-79C6C77A7327@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      It has featured electronic kimonos, cat communication devices, and electronic gloves to record a pianist\u2019s finger work.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_CF65D8C6-59C3-8651-C0AB-88BA4E6C2891@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      At the next show, from January 18 to 20, 2017, the organizers expect more than 200 exhibitors and 19,000 visitors.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E099832E-415E-5EE9-0741-74B665A07DA2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cWith better functionality, lighter components and smaller designs, wearing devices is now no longer a fantasy,\u201d says show director Yuhi Maezono. \u201cWearables are gathering attention as the next big growth market.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_B8F3FC4F-DDFA-8D46-36D8-D63DB4C82A13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Inupathy is a dog harness slated to launch at the end of this year that will allow pet owners to communicate with their dogs.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6DF8924D-21F7-919F-ABFC-D63DB90B4439@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      As well as a heart monitor, the harness features noise-canceling technology which can isolate the animal\u2019s heartbeat and track its reactions to stimulus, such as food, games, people and toys.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6CF9876C-80FA-98F9-8C28-D63DB90B78E9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      With this data, the harness assesses a dog\u2019s mood and changes color to inform the owners.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_EA8F0206-67C7-CA8A-831C-D63DB90B12E9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Equipped with six LED lights, the collar glows blue to show calm, red for excitement, and displays a rainbow theme for happiness.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E9F047E2-A75C-8146-96C8-D63DB90B3096@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Joji Yamaguchi, CEO of Inupathy, was inspired by his Corgi, Akane, who was a nervous puppy. To better understand the dog\u2019s anxiety, the biologist developed Inupathy to monitor his heart rate.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_07F4E57C-4873-AF11-A0BD-D63DB90C3CAA@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cI always felt like I couldn\u2019t understand Akane very well and I wanted to get be closer to him,\u201d says Yamaguchi.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_1F50DBBA-086B-0647-ABCA-D63DB90E75E7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cBuddhism and old Japanese religion says every animals, plants, and even rocks have spirit inside. It\u2019s stressful when you can\u2019t solve problems that are upsetting them.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_7154A4E4-B726-CF76-1F24-D63DB90E68C0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Yamaguchi expects wearable wellness tracking will have applications for humans, too.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_FFF97A41-8D92-192D-349D-D63DB91001ED@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cPersonalization, of artificial intelligence will be a game-changer,\u201d says Yamaguchi.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_AB73E5C9-8F6F-A597-C806-D63DB9101F31@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cFor instance, if you show a certain behavior before you start feeling depressed, predicting your depression from that behavior is extremely valuable for an individual. An AI that works personally for you will eventually make this possible.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6EACD8D9-CD71-CED2-5026-74ACFB348B2B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Archelis \u2013 a wearable chair launched in Japan this year \u2013 is also creating a buzz internationally.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_C44B4D35-C483-A681-9B62-74ACFB37047B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      A collaboration between Nitto mold factory, Chiba University, Japan Polymer Technology and Hiroaki Nishimura Design, in Japan, it was initially intended for surgeons, who need to rest their legs during long operations.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6F0DE7FE-377E-AC6E-6C2B-74ACFB38CA1A@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      The chair enables its wearer to effectively sit down and stand up at the same time.\n  <\/p>\n<div knee pain \u2013 especially for surgeons who are older.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_6EA2BA77-416B-4FFA-88D0-74ACFB3B7735@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Made of 3D-printed panels, Archelis does not require any electrical components or batteries.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" innovation is in the effective design: flexible carbon panels wrap around the buttocks, legs and feet to provide support and minimize pressure on joints.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph
