Even children who don\u2019t use their phones or the other technologies littering their bedrooms at night are losing shut-eye and becoming prone to daylight sleepiness, the analysis published today in JAMA Pediatrics finds.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A083F460-B7D4-CCE1-B0A4-1B86F6A6CD11@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      The analysis found \u201ca consistent pattern of effect across a wide range of countries and settings,\u201d said Dr. Ben Carter, lead author and a senior lecturer in biostatistics at King\u2019s College London.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_FDDE4863-831B-11F1-85FC-1B541137D458@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Carter and his colleagues weeded through the medical literature to identify hundreds of applicable studies conducted between January 1, 2011, and June 15, 2015. They chose 20 research reports involving a total of 125,198 children, evenly divided by gender, with an average age of 14\u00bd years. After extracting pertinent data, Carter and his co-authors performed their own meta-analysis.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_4A993AAF-F28A-7C57-A722-1B4D20AF8E02@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Few parents will be surprised by the results: The team found a \u201cstrong and consistent association\u201d between bedtime media device use and inadequate sleep quantity, poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9F18D5E6-043E-BDE8-C745-1B4D20B1F283@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Surprisingly, though, Carter and his team discovered that children who did not use their devices in their bedrooms still had their sleep interrupted and were likely to suffer the same problems. The lights and sounds emitted by the technology, as well as the content itself, may be too stimulating.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_7E32382A-A793-53F1-966F-1B550BA08CDE@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Though Carter admits that a weakness of the analysis was \u201chow the data was collected in the primary studies: self-reported by parents and children,\u201d many of us will probably recognize our own families\u2019 habits reflected in the statistics.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_9B3A3DB8-9309-22D4-538C-1B4D20B3F48B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      A large-scale poll conducted in the United States by the National Sleep Foundation (PDF) reported in 2013 that 72% of all children and 89% of teens have at least one device in their sleep environment. Most of this technology is used near bedtime, that same report found.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_58B789AF-5D9C-7652-FFEA-1B4D20B47A4C@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      According to Carter and his co-authors, this omnipresent technology negatively influences children\u2019s sleep by delaying their sleep time, as they finish watching a movie or play one more game.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_A283BE06-8909-869B-7A69-1B4D20B57AF1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Light emitted from these devices may also affect the circadian rhythm, the internal clock timing biological processes, including body temperature and hormone release, the researchers explain. One specific hormone, melatonin, induces tiredness and contributes to the timing of our sleep-wake cycles. Electronic lights can delay the release of melatonin, disrupting this cycle and making it harder to fall asleep.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_24A5F1A2-6AD1-6DBE-4A3B-1B4D20B6504B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Carter and his co-authors also suggest that online content may be psychologically stimulating and keep children and teens awake far past the hour when they turn off their devices and try to sleep.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_1CED5990-1BF9-9250-DBEB-1B4D20B66207@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      \u201cSleep is vital for children,\u201d said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, director of the pediatric neurology sleep medicine program at Duke University Medical Center, who was not involved in the new analysis. \u201cWe know that sleep plays a crucial role in brain development, memory, self-regulation, attention, immune function, cardiovascular health and much more.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_AC053ED1-C077-C5DB-98B9-1B4D20B8370B@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Kansagra, author of \u201cMy Child Won\u2019t Sleep,\u201d noted that the period of greatest brain development is in our first three years of life, which corresponds to when we need and get the most sleep. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to believe that this would be a coincidence.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_4A24F19D-DBDE-2E0A-3C20-1B4D20B9DA66@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Kansagra said it\u2019s possible that parents underreported kids using devices at night, but more likely, the technology is simply interfering with sleep hygiene. \u201cFor example, children who are allowed to keep devices in their room may be more likely to avoid a good sleep routine, which we know is helpful for sleep,\u201d he said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_B40B3D51-E09A-BFF9-7E22-1B4D20BA69F8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Dr. Neil Kline, a representative of the American Sleep Association, agrees that sleep plays an integral role in a child\u2019s healthy development, even though \u201cwe don\u2019t know all of the science behind it. There is even some research which demonstrates an association between ADHD and some sleep disorders.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_10BE76B3-CC7D-CD1C-AD12-1B4D20BBDACD@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      In many respects, the findings of the new study are no surprise. \u201cSleep hygiene is being significantly impacted by technology, especially in the teen years,\u201d said Kline, who bases his opinion not only on research but on his own \u201cpersonal experience and also the anecdotes of many other sleep experts.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/interactive_B31DF693-EAE3-EBDF-DD37-D657D239D0AE-h_6fd0cb20bf05c3a1231180ebe92ce665-paragraph_40C84ADB-BCCB-9DD0-CC39-1B64E3A83313@published\" class=\"factbox_inline-small     &#10;    factbox_inline-small__standard  \">\n<h3 class=\"factbox_inline-small__title\" data-editable=\"title\">\n    Join the conversation<br \/>\n  <\/h3>\n<li>See the latest news and share your comments with CNN Health on Facebook and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cnnhealth\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_70441EA0-70DF-AE4A-08E7-1B4D20BCB2D8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      Sleep hygiene \u2013 tips that help facilitate good, continuous and adequate sleep \u2013 include having a room that is quiet. \u201cAnd that would mean removing items that interfere with sleep, including electronics, TV and even pets if they interfere with sleep,\u201d Kline said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"archive.cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph_E22B1EFD-237D-013F-5673-1B93A34A0EE7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\">\n      One more important tip comes from the National Sleep Foundation, which recommends at least 30 minutes of \u201cgadget-free transition time\u201d before bedtime.
