Iran unveils upgraded hypersonic missile as Khamenei touts Israel ‘failure’ | Israel-Palestine conflict News

The Iranian show of force comes amid heightened US military presence in the region after Israel began bombing Gaza.

Tehran, Iran – Iran has unveiled an upgraded version of its hypersonic missile in a military exhibition for the country’s supreme leader.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday visited a university run by the aerospace division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Tehran, where a more advanced version of the Fattah hypersonic missile was put on display along with an array of arms, including the Iranian-made Gaza drone.

A new version of the Shahed series of unmanned aerial vehicles and an upgraded version of the 9-Dey missile defence system, capable of launching short to medium-range projectiles, were also unveiled.

The IRGC in addition displayed a new missile defence system called Mehran, which is said to employ solid-fuel missiles.

Iran had first unveiled the missile in June, joining a small club of countries, including China and Russia, which have weapons capable of travelling long distances with strong maneuverability.

The Iranian state media said the Fattah II missile is a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), a projectile that glides to its target after the initial launch, offering substantially more maneuverability compared to a ballistic warhead travelling in a more predictable arc pattern.

No more information was provided on the upgraded version on Sunday, but Iran had said Fattah is capable of moving at a speed of up to Mach 15 (5.1 km or 3.2 miles per second) with a range of 1,400km (870 miles).

IRGC officials had said in June that the elite force could look to improve its range of hypersonics to 2,000km (1,242 miles), which would effectively cover the distance to Iran’s regional archenemy, Israel.

The Iranian supreme leader on Sunday again condemned Israel and its Western allies for their war on the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 12,000 Palestinians, nearly half of them children.

Khamenei said “the Zionist regime is a symbol of racism”, adding that Western backing for the weeks-long bombing of the enclave means Western leaders “also believe in racism and see nothing wrong with it”.

He said brutal attacks on hospitals in Gaza indicate anger on the part of Israeli leaders due to their “failure” in defeating Palestinian fighters.

“The Islamic governments must sever their political relations with the Zionist regime at least for a limited time,” Khamenei said, also calling on the Muslim states to cut the flow of energy and goods to Israel.

The Iranian military show of force came as the United States moved considerable military assets, including two carrier strike groups and a nuclear submarine, to the region.

Under the umbrella of the Iran-backed “resistance axis” of political and armed groups across the region, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthis have been engaged in cross-border fighting with Israel since last month in solidarity with Hamas fighters.

Israel on Sunday said the Houthis seized a British-owned and Japanese-operated cargo ship in the southern Red Sea, describing the indent as an “Iranian act of terrorism”.

Cricket World Cup: Heartbreak for hosts India as Australia win in final | World News

Australia have won the Cricket World Cup by six wickets after a Travis Head century took them to victory over India.

The team were chasing a target of 241 to win the championship after bowling India out for 240 in front of a 132,000-capacity partisan crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The hosts took three early wickets before Head and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the Australian innings, Head scoring 137 from 120 balls.

India won every single match of the tournament in the lead up to the final, while Australia lost their first two – with the pair playing each other in their opening game.

It’s the sixth time Australia have won the event, while India were seeking a third title.

England were knocked out of the tournament in the group stages.

Labuschagne said the Aussies’ win was “unbelievable” and the “best achievement” he had been part of.

He added: “India have been the team of tournament but you knew if we played our best cricket we had a chance.

“Our bowlers were sensational. Head put on a sensational display.

“I’m a man of faith and believe in God but the way this has happened is unbelievable to me. I’m lost for words.

“I’m thankful to the coaches for sticking with me.”

The Dutch star, who sang ‘Viva Las Vegas’ as he won a record-extending 18th victory of the season, had criticised the Grand Prix before the race.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen sang “Viva Las Vegas” after racing to a record-extending 18th victory of the season and joining Sebastian Vettel in third place on Formula One’s all-time winners’ list.

The triumph on a spectacular Saturday night in Sin City was the 53rd of the triple champion’s career, and sixth in a row, and came after a five-second penalty for forcing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc off track at the start and then a collision with Mercedes’s George Russell.

Leclerc finished second after starting in pole position, losing and regaining the lead and then losing it again before passing Sergio Perez on the final lap to deny Red Bull a seventh one-two of the season.

The win was Red Bull’s 20th in 21 races, another record for a single season, and delivered the racing that had risked being swamped in a wave of hype as Vegas hosted a Grand Prix for the first time since the 1980s.

It also completed a sweep of three US wins in 2023 for their 26-year-old Dutch driver, who was also dominant in Miami and Austin.

Verstappen – who had been the Las Vegas Grand Prix’s biggest critic before the race – had to admit that it was a success.

“It was a tough one,” said Verstappen, whose race suit paid homage to the signature jumpsuit of the late “King of Rock and Roll”, Elvis Presley.

“I tried to go for it at the start, I think we both braked quite late, and then I just ran out of grip, and we ended up a bit wide, so the stewards gave me a penalty for that.

“That put us a little bit on the back foot, and I had to pass quite a few cars … It was definitely a lot of fun.”

Red Bull played the timeless Elvis song over the team radio after pop star Justin Bieber waved the chequered flag, and Verstappen showed he is a far better driver than singer by joining in.

Leclerc, whose team are the only ones to beat Red Bull this season, showed all his fighting spirit after the initial setback.

“I wanted that win so bad, but what a race,” he gasped over the radio after finishing 2.070 seconds behind Verstappen.

It was the second race in a row that Perez had lost out on the last lap, with the Mexican passed by Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso at the line in Brazil.

Perez at least had the consolation of securing second in a championship won long ago by his teammate – another first for Red Bull, who have never previously ended a season with their drivers one-two.

Esteban Ocon was fourth for Alpine, with Lance Stroll fifth for Aston Martin and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz sixth.

Mercedes seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton was seventh, ahead of a demoted Russell, Alonso and McLaren’s Australian rookie Oscar Piastri, who took a bonus point for fastest lap.

While Red Bull won both titles long ago, Ferrari closed the gap to second-placed Mercedes to four points with one race remaining in Abu Dhabi.

The announcement of a third US grand prix was initially met with enthusiasm, but the mood began to sour in the days leading up to the event as street closures choked traffic and public interest began to wane.

Making matters worse, a disastrous first practice session on Thursday night lasted just eight minutes before being cancelled for track repairs, leading to a class-action lawsuit by disgruntled fans.

But Hamilton said Saturday’s enthralling Las Vegas Grand Prix had been the perfect answer to critics of the new race.

Verstappen had been the most prominent of those critics of the scene in Vegas this week, arguing that the Grand Prix was over-dominated by the razmataz in the party city.

But the night-time street race with multiple lead changes as the cars powered down the famous Las Vegas Strip showed the event can also deliver sporting thrills.

“For all those people that were so negative about this weekend, saying it’s all about the show and blah blah blah – I think Vegas proved them wrong,” said Hamilton.
