قال مسؤولون أمريكيون الأحد، إن سفينة حربية تابعة للبحرية الأمريكية استجابت لنداء استغاثة من ناقلة تجارية في خليج عدن احتجزها مسلحون، وأضافوا أن الناقلة آمنة الآن.

وأعلنت الشركة المالكة للناقلة أنها تحمل اسم “سنترال بارك”، وأنها كانت تنقل شحنة من حمض الفوسفوريك. ولم يعلن المسؤولون هوية المهاجمين. وقال أحد المسؤولين الأمريكيين، تحدث شريطة عدم ذكر هويته، إن السفينة الحربية الأمريكية ميسون استجابت لنداء الاستغاثة، مضيفا أنه تم تحرير الناقلة.

والحادث المتعلق بناقلة الكيماويات هو أحدث واقعة في سلسلة هجمات على سفن بمنطقة الشرق الأوسط منذ اندلاع الحرب بين إسرائيل وحركة المقاومة الإسلامية الفلسطينية (حماس) الشهر الماضي.

كما يأتي في أعقاب احتجاز الحوثيين اليمنيين المتحالفين مع إيران سفينة شحن مرتبطة بإسرائيل في جنوب البحر الأحمر الأسبوع الماضي. وتعهدت جماعة الحوثي باستهداف مزيد من السفن الإسرائيلية. وكانت قد أطلقت أيضا صواريخ باليستية وطائرات مسيرة مسلحة على إسرائيل.

وتظهر بيانات (إل إس إي جي) أن ناقلة النفط الصغيرة سنترال بارك (حمولتها 19998 طنا) تديرها شركة زودياك ماريتايم ليمتد المملوكة لعائلة عوفر الإسرائيلية، وهي شركة دولية لإدارة السفن مقرها لندن. والناقلة مبنية عام 2015، وترفع علم ليبيريا ومملوكة لشركة كلومفيز للشحن.

وقالت شركة زودياك ماريتايم ليمتد في بيان، إن سنترال بارك، التي تحمل شحنة كاملة من حمض الفوسفوريك، تعرضت لما يشتبه بأنه حادث قرصنة في أثناء إبحارها في المياه الدولية، على بعد نحو 54 ميلا بحريا قبالة الصومال.

ويستخدم حمض الفوسفوريك غالبا في صناعة الأسمدة.

وأضاف البيان: “أولويتنا هي سلامة طاقمنا وعدده 22 فردا على متن الناقلة. وللسفينة التي يقودها ربان تركي طاقم متعدد الجنسيات يتألف من روس وفيتناميين وبلغار وهنود وجورجيين وفلبينيين”.

ولم يصدر تعليق حتى الآن من المسؤولين الحوثيين.

وقالت هيئة عمليات التجارة البحرية البريطانية الأحد، إنها على علم بهجوم محتمل في جنوب غرب عدن، وطالبت السفن الأخرى بتوخي الحذر.

وحملت الولايات المتحدة إيران المسؤولية عن هجمات على عدة سفن في المنطقة في السنوات القليلة الماضية، غير أن طهران نفت تورطها.

وقال مسؤول دفاعي أمريكي السبت، إن سفينة حاويات تديرها شركة يسيطر عليها إسرائيليون تعرضت لهجوم بطائرة مسيرة يشتبه بأنها إيرانية في المحيط الهندي، ما تسبب في أضرار طفيفة للسفينة دون وقوع إصابات.

واجتاح مقاتلو حركة حماس جنوب إسرائيل في السابع من تشرين الأول/أكتوبر، ما أدى إلى مقتل 1200 شخص، بحسب قول إسرائيل التي ردت منذ ذلك الحين بشن هجوم على غزة أسقط أكثر من 14 ألف قتيل، 40 بالمئة منهم تقريبا من الأطفال، حسبما تذكر السلطات الصحية الفلسطينية في القطاع.

Saudi club Al Nassr host Iran’s Persepolis FC for their AFC Champions League match in Riyadh as they look to book a place in the next round.

When Saudi Pro League team Al Nassr FC visited Iran to play Tehran-based Persian Gulf Pro League side Persepolis FC in their opening match of the AFC Champions League in September, Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed the headlines as fans and officials scrambled to welcome the Portuguese star.

Fans tracked the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s plane, waited for him at the airport, chased his bus, climbed a hill to the hotel where he was staying, and made the Saudi club cancel its training on the first day.

Tehran’s municipality put up large banners welcoming Ronaldo and Al Nassr in several languages, the Persepolis director gave the Portuguese star a handwoven Persian carpet – and apparently a special SIM card so he could have unrestricted internet access – and Ronaldo met with the Saudi ambassador to Iran.

Two months on, the Iranian side are making a historic trip to the Saudi capital Riyadh – their first since the resumption of diplomatic relations between both countries.

The Asian nations agreed to a “groundbreaking” deal, brokered a few weeks before the match in Tehran, to resume home and away football matches between club sides after seven years of competing at neutral venues.

In Tehran, fans were delighted to have Ronaldo in their midst despite not catching a glimpse of the 38-year-old as the match was played behind closed doors.

“Even though we couldn’t go watch that match live because no spectators were allowed, it was still nice to have international stars here. We haven’t had that for a long while,” Saman, a 24-year-old Persepolis fan, told Al Jazeera.

“It doesn’t look like we’re beating Ronaldo in the group stage, but it would be nice to get a win in Saudi Arabia,” Saman said.

Football diplomacy has gone far from smoothly for Iran, though.

Persepolis were scheduled to arrive in the kingdom on Friday, but their flight was cancelled, reportedly because Saudi officials took issue with the airline that was being used to transport the players. The issue was resolved and the team arrived early Sunday.

An early October match between Sepahan and Al Ittihad was cancelled – and eventually declared a 3-0 win for the Saudi club by the AFC – because a bust of Qassem Soleimani, the top Iranian general assassinated by the United States in 2020, was installed at the stadium.

Al Nassr sit atop the AFC Champions League Group E table with four wins out of four and only need a draw to confirm their progress to the next round.

Persepolis are placed second after four matches, with a narrow lead over third-placed Istiklol and fourth-placed Al Duhail.

The Saudi side are in prolific form ahead of Monday’s tie at the Al-Awwal Park Stadium and have enjoyed a string of wins in both in their domestic league and the regional competition. Ronaldo goes into the match on the back of a two-goal outing in Al Nassr’s 3-0 win over Al Akhdoud on Friday.

Persepolis form

Persepolis are in the middle of a poor run of form, with a loss and two draws in their home league and a draw in their last AFC Champions League match against Tajik side Istiklol. The club – one of the oldest and most popular in Iran – will look for a victory on the pitch to make up for the 2-0 home loss in Tehran and secure qualification as one of the three best second-placed teams from the West Zone of the competition. They have seven points from four matches.

The teams have now met on four occasions in the competition, and the Saudi side hold a slight edge with two wins. Persepolis have recorded one win, in the 2015 AFC Champions League, and their meeting in the 2020 edition ended in a draw.

As the four-day truce between Hamas and Israel in Gaza enters its final 24 hours, calls for an extension are growing from various quarters.

Hamas has said it is pushing for an extension to the temporary ceasefire if “serious efforts” are made to increase the number of Palestinian prisoners released by Israel.

Under the terms of the deal, Hamas will release a total of 50 hostages, while Israel will release 150 Palestinian detainees over four days.

So far over three days, around 117 Palestinian prisoners have been released by Israel, while Hamas has freed 40 Israeli hostages in exchange.

Separately, 17 Thai hostages and one Filipino also being held by the group in Gaza have been allowed to leave the enclave.

Israel said the deal calls for the truce to be extended an extra day for every additional 10 hostages freed.

Internationally, mediators led by the US and Qatar are also attempting to facilitate an extension to the ceasefire.

President Joe Biden said it is in everyone’s interests that the truce continues as long as hostages are getting released.

The latest captives to be freed include four-year-old dual Israeli-American national Abigail Edan, whose parents were reportedly killed in the 7 October attacks.

The US president said her father was “gunned down while using his body to shield little Abigail”, who then ran to a neighbour’s house where she was taken hostage alongside another family.

“What she endured is unthinkable,” Mr Biden told a news conference.

He added: “Thank God she’s home… I wish I were there to hold her.”

Mr Biden said he hoped the “humanitarian pause” could be extended to allow more captives to be freed – and for more aid to be taken into Gaza.

He told reporters in Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Sunday: “That’s my goal, that’s our goal, to keep this pause going beyond tomorrow, so that we can continue to see more hostages come out and surge more humanitarian relief to those in need in Gaza.”

Mr Biden said the US would “not stop working until every hostage is returned to their loved ones,” while he also emphasised that “innocent children in Gaza are suffering greatly as well”.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met security forces inside the Gaza Strip on Sunday where he also expressed hope for extending the temporary truce provided it meant that on every additional day 10 captives would be freed.

He also issued a statement saying he had spoken to Mr Biden reiterating his offer, but also told the president that Israel would resume its offensive “with all of our might” once the truce expires.

“We will return with full force to achieve our goals: The elimination of Hamas, ensuring that Gaza does not return to what it was; and of course the release of all our hostages,” Mr Netanyahu added.

Meanwhile, the prime minister of Qatar said that any extension of the truce was dependent on Hamas locating dozens of women and children being held hostage in Gaza by civilians and gangs.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani told the Financial Times that more than 40 other women and children were being kept captive in Gaza who were not believed to be held by Hamas.

He said: “If they get additional women and children, there will be an extension.

“We don’t yet have any clear information how many they can find because… one of the purposes of the pause is [Hamas] will have time to search for the rest of the missing people.”

However, there are questions over whether a truce can hold much longer after violence flared in the West Bank, where Israeli forces killed seven Palestinians, late on Saturday and early Sunday, according to medics and local sources.

Medan, Indonesia –  As Israeli tanks and troops laid siege to the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza last week, volunteer medical worker Fikri Rofiul Haq faced the choice of evacuating to safety or staying with his patients.

Haq and fellow his Indonesian colleagues, Reza Aldilla Kurniawan and Farid Zazabil Al Ayubi, volunteers with the Jakarta-based Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C), opted to stay put until the Israeli military forced them to leave, he said.

“We were evacuated via a route used by the International Red Cross with the permission of the Israeli army. There were three evacuations on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and we were evacuated last as we prioritised the wounded who were at the Indonesian Hospital,” Haq told Al Jazeera.

Haq said that Israeli forces deliberately destroyed the Indonesian-funded hospital’s only working generator by setting it on fire and killed 12 people with indiscriminate shelling of the first, second and third floors of the building.

“Before we were evacuated, the attacks got worse and worse, hour by hour,” said Haq, who was unable to communicate for several weeks until his evacuation to Khan Younis.

“I saw it with my own eyes. There were three large tanks around 50 metres [54 yards] from the Indonesian Hospital building and they fired periodically at the hospital, which was devastating. Now the Indonesian Hospital has been completely taken over by the Israeli army,” he said.

Israeli forces, who initially gave medical staff and patients just hours to leave the hospital, have been accused of reducing one of Gaza’s largest medical facilities to ruins in the days leading up to the four-day truce with Hamas, which began on Friday.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Friday that Israeli fire in the final hours before the pause killed one woman and injured at least three other people.

Al Jazeera’s Osama Bin Javaid, who gained access to the facility, reported that there was a “stench of death” outside the hospital “as charred and decomposing bodies, children among them, pile up in corners”.

Sarbini Abdul Murad, the head of MER-C in Jakarta, said the attacks on the hospital were a violation of international law and that Indonesia should do more to hold Israel to account given the country’s links to the hospital, which was inaugurated in 2016 by Indonesia’s then-Vice President Jusuf Kalla after being funded with donations from Indonesian citizens and humanitarian organisations.

However, Jakarta’s leverage may be limited. Indonesia does not have diplomatic ties with Israel and the hospital is not owned by Indonesia or Indonesians since it was donated to the people of Gaza.

“The Indonesian Hospital was built with donations by Indonesian citizens and flies the Indonesian flag as a symbol of our friendship,” Sarbini told Al Jazeera.

“The most we can do at MER-C is represent the Indonesian people and encourage the Indonesian government and the foreign ministry to take this case to the International Criminal Court (ICC).”

“Everyone needs to lobby the ICC, particularly the big five [the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States], and call for a permanent ceasefire,” he added.

Sarbini said there are no plans to permanently evacuate the three Indonesian volunteers from Gaza as there is still important work for them to do in terms of providing humanitarian assistance to the wounded and displaced in Khan Younis.

For now, Haq and his colleagues are taking stock of their situation as they figure out how they can best help the people of Gaza.

He said they are being fed well after surviving for days on dwindling rations of food and water at the besieged Indonesian Hospital.

“Thank God, we have enough food here now and there are people selling supplies around the European Hospital in Khan Younis,” Haq said.

“We are eating French fries, fried aubergines and fried peppers. Sometimes we are able to get rice with a little meat, and sometimes we eat local food like bread and hummus.”
