Three American troops have been killed and 34 injured in a drone attack in Jordan.

Those killed in the attack were sleeping in a tent at a place called Tower 22 in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border, and some of those injured are being evacuated from the country.

US President Joe Biden said the attack was carried out by “radical Iran-backed militant groups” in Syria and Iraq on Saturday night.

“While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” he said in a statement.

The Pentagon has still not released details on the types of injuries sustained, but a US official said 34 personnel are being monitored for possible traumatic brain injuries – which is a common occurrence after a large blast.

An earlier statement from the US military had said 25 were injured in the attack.

It’s the first time US troops have been killed in the region since war began in Gaza.

“We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism,” Mr Biden continued, referring to the “patriots” who died in the attack.

“And have no doubt – we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing.”

Analysis: Huge pressure on Biden – both at home and abroad

A spokesman for Jordan’s government, however, said the attack did not happen on their soil and insisted it was in Syria. They said the attack did not result in the injury of any Jordanian border guards.

The US has long used Jordan – which neighbours Iraq, Israel, the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, Saudi Arabia and Syria – as a basing point, with about 3,000 troops typically stationed there.

Since the war in Gaza began, US troops in Iraq and Syria have faced drone and missile attacks on their bases, but this was the first time they’ve been attacked in Jordan.

Attack shows how war in Gaza is spreading through Middle East

The deaths of three US soldiers are the first since 7 October and because of the location, the Jordanian border, and the anticipated American response, this is certainly an escalation in the wider Middle East conflict.

The target, Tower 22, is not a conventional US military outpost in the region.

It’s a crossing point between Jordan and Syria, established since at least 2015 and used as an infiltration point for US special forces to enter and exit Syria.

While the base is on the Jordanian side of the border, the attacks were likely launched from within Syria.

Jordan has publicly distanced itself from these attacks, which might have something to do with Jordan’s preference that US military presence on their soil is kept below the radar, but it equally might point to a special operations position that wasn’t as well guarded as more established bases.

It also suggests an intelligence failure to prevent the attack.

Ever since 7 October, Jordan, with its large Palestinian population, has been deeply concerned the conflict would spread there.

The White House blames Iranian-backed militia, which is an obvious call, but could cover any number of groups.

The most likely is Kata’ib Hezbollah, a radical Shia group. They mustn’t be confused with the better-known and larger Hezbollah in Lebanon, although both have strong links to Iran and probably each other.

US forces have been targeted on many occasions in Iraq and Syria since 7 October, although many of these attacks have gone somewhat under the radar.

However, in recent weeks, America has been hitting Kata’ib Hezbollah hard. This attack could be a retaliation for that.

If nothing else, this again shows how the war in Gaza is spreading through the Middle East.

America, as Israel’s staunch ally, is finding itself increasingly dragged into multiple smaller-scale skirmishes around the region, whether it be in the Red Sea, Iraq, or, as was demonstrated over the past 24 hours, on the Jordan-Syria border.

The hope is that a ceasefire in Gaza, possibly close, will see things calm down elsewhere, but every passing week sees the fallout of Israel’s war affect other parts of the Middle East.

While US officials are still working to identify the precise group responsible for the attack, they believe one of several Iranian-backed groups are responsible.

The identities of the military service members killed will be withheld for 24 hours until their next of kin have been informed, say US officials.

The attack is a major escalation in the Middle East, where war broke out after Palestinian Islamist group Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, killing 1,200 and taking dozens to Gaza as hostages.

Israel’s subsequent assault on Gaza has killed more than 26,000 Palestinians, according to the local health ministry.

While the US has maintained it is not at war in the region, it has – along with the UK – made strikes against targets of Yemen’s Houthi groups, which have been attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

This is a troubling moment on many levels.

It represents yet another clear indication that America and its allies are facing a regional conflict in the Middle East.

It is a conflict in which they are protagonists, a conflict they are struggling to influence and a conflict which they have not contained.

It’s moments like this which will come to mark turning points; a shifting of the dial, an attack which will force President Biden to respond.

The moment presents him with a complex range of challenges.

In an election year and with the polls against him, he faces a domestic conundrum: to double down hard in retaliation for the attack would be the natural response for the commander-in-chief.

But his probable political challenger, Donald Trump, is running with a narrative that Biden has pulled America into wars. Biden does not need this to escalate.

Geopolitically, the fact the attack reportedly took place inside Jordan, a close ally, is remarkable and troubling for Biden as well as for the Jordanian government.

Biden will probably feel compelled to send more troops into the region to further secure the US bases and act as greater deterrent. But that puts more of them in harm’s way.

It will also add to internal tensions for Jordan where King Abdullah will not want to be seen to be such a visible supporter of America. Remember public opinion for America in the Arab world is extremely low following its unequivocal support for Israel’s war in Gaza.

Since the 7 October Hamas attacks, there have been more than 150 strikes by Iran-backed militias in Syria and Iraq against US troops.

It’s remarkable that none resulted in any fatalities, a fact that allowed President Biden not to feel compelled to escalate.

Last Sunday, two US Navy SEALs were confirmed to have died after they disappeared during a maritime operation to intercept weapons from Iran headed to Houthi fighters in Yemen. The clandestine, special forces nature of that mission allowed for a vague explanation and a vague response.

This latest attack is of a different order: three Americans dead and 34 injured.

For a president with so many challenges, domestic and global intertwined, the pressure is huge.

The killing of three US soldiers and the injuring of dozens more in a drone attack creates one near-certainty – the United States will retaliate with military force.

The harder question is whether this response will be contained to the “radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq” that the White House has accused of carrying out the carnage, or widened to include the regime in Tehran that supports them – or both.

Joe Biden must respond forcefully to deter future threats against the large numbers of US forces operating across the region.

But this foreign crisis is playing into domestic politics as well.

Follow live: Biden blames ‘radical Iran-backed militant groups’ for drone attack

The president’s predecessor and arch-rival, Donald Trump – vying to replace him in this year’s election – has already used the drone attack to accuse Mr Biden of being weak.

Be in no doubt: the drone strike on Saturday night is a significant escalation in a region that has been threatening to explode ever since the militant group Hamas, also backed by Iran, attacked Israel on 7 October, triggering the Israeli war in Gaza.

Given the fact that US soldiers have died, there is arguably a greater risk of igniting a wider conflict than even the decision by the United States and the UK earlier in the month to launch airstrikes against Iranian-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen.

In a statement, Mr Biden mourned the loss and wounding of the soldiers.

He said facts are still being gathered but “we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq”.

The commander in chief added: “Have no doubt – we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner our choosing.”

The last time tensions between the United States and Iran were this high was in 2019 when Mr Trump was in power and chose to unravel a nuclear deal with Tehran.

At one point, the then president even said the US military had been “cocked and loaded” for a direct strike against Iran in retaliation to the downing of an American surveillance drone.

That strike was called off because Mr Trump said he had felt such a response would have resulted in the deaths of Iranians and that would not have been proportionate given the aircraft that Iran had attacked did not have any personnel on board.

The drone strike against US forces close to Jordan’s northeast border with Syria is very different, though it creates a similar dilemma.

As the attack was allegedly carried out by Iranian proxies rather than Iran directly, it would be harder to justify a direct strike against Tehran unless there is clear evidence of Iranian direction in what happened.

Also weighing into any US calculations will be the need to continue to try to contain the violence in the region – already in danger of intensifying into uncontrolled escalation.

Any direct attack on Iran could trigger retaliatory Iranian missile strikes against US targets in the region or against American allies such as Israel.

Many Gulf states will also be incredibly nervous as they too would potentially be in the Iranian firing line.

By contrast, a decision only to go after the Iranian-backed groups accused of carrying out the strike would probably need to involve a much larger use of force than has happened in the past.

The US has launched airstrikes against Iranian-backed militants in Iraq and Syria on multiple occasions in response to attacks on its troops in both countries.

But this action has clearly failed to deter the threat so far.

A British base jumper has died after his parachute failed to open during a stunt in Thailand, according to reports.

The man has been named by a number of news outlets as Nathy Odinson.

The 33-year-old from Cambridgeshire is said to have jumped from a 29-storey building in the coastal resort of Pattaya on Saturday night.

According to the Daily Mirror, police lieutenant Kamolporn Nadee, deputy inspector of Investigations at the Bang Lamung district police station, said: “The parachute that the deceased used to jump malfunctioned and was not centred as expected.

“Forensics officers are investigating the case further. They are examining the parachute.”

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand.”

Mr Odinson reportedly hit a tree before falling to the ground.

Photos from the scene showed what appeared to be a blue parachute on the pavement next to a protective helmet.
