Carlos Bolsonaro: Son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro targeted in spy probe raids - reports | World News

Carlos Bolsonaro, one of the sons of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, has been the target of police raids, reports say.

The raids have been carried out as part of an investigation into suspected illegal spying on political opponents during his father’s term in office, according to Reuters.

Federal police served search warrants against Carlos on Monday, the news agency reported, citing two sources.

Carlos, a city councillor in Rio, was said to be his father’s propaganda minister and ran an office inside the presidential palace suspected of putting out fake news against opponents.

The former leader’s son has denied running a fake news operation.

But he is now being investigated for allegedly using data collected by the Brazilian Intelligence Agency – known as ABIN – through Israeli software called First Mile, which tracked the location of private mobile phones, a federal police source told Reuters.

The Supreme Court is also investigating the “fake” news outlet being run from inside the presidential office and which was dubbed the “cabinet of hatred”.

A police statement said eight warrants were being served in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and two other cities to identify “the main recipients and beneficiaries of information illegally produced by ABIN through clandestine actions”.

The operation was the closest that police probes have come to the far-right Mr Bolsonaro, who has been barred from running for office until 2030 for abuse of power and misuse of the media when president.

The wider investigation is looking at accusations of illegal monitoring of citizens by ABIN during Mr Bolsonaro’s presidency between 2019 and 2022.

Supreme Court documents unsealed last week showed the spy agency is accused of illegal surveillance on at least three justices and a former Lower House speaker during Mr Bolsonaro’s presidency.

Officers launched the probe on Thursday and, in a statement, revealed seven federal police officers were being investigated and had already been dismissed from their duties.

A total of 21 search and seizure measures were being carried out.

Police added the operation was being extended across a number of locations, including the capital Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro.

According to court records, the country’s former intelligence chief, Alexandre Ramagem – a Bolsonaro loyalist planning to run for mayor of Rio de Janeiro and who has denied any wrongdoing – was among those targeted by the initial search warrants.

Police said the investigation centred on an “organised crime” group which operated within the intelligence agency.

Amelia Earhart disappearance solved claims explorer as he reveals 'pics' of missing plane | US News

A pilot and explorer believes he has solved one of aviation’s greatest mysteries and discovered the location of Amelia Earhart’s plane.

Tony Romeo, a former Air Force intelligence officer and the CEO of Deep Sea Vision, sold commercial real estate to fund his deep-sea search of the Pacific last year.

He combed the ocean floor with sonar technology in the suspected area of Earhart’s crash in a bid to find the aircraft, which vanished in 1937.

His team reviewed sonar data in December caught by an underwater drone from the research voyage and found an image of a blurry, plane-like shape Mr Romeo believes is the lost aviator’s twin engine Lockheed 10-E Electra.

The image was taken about 100 miles from Howland Island, halfway between Australia and Hawaii.

Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, had been expected to land there in July 1937 to refuel during her bid to be the first female pilot to circumnavigate the globe.

But they never arrived and were declared dead two years later, after the US concluded she had crashed somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, and her remains were never found.

Mr Romeo is adamant the plane he has found is Earhart’s, despite the blurry quality of the photograph, telling Sky News sister station NBC News: “You’d be hard-pressed to convince me that’s anything but an aircraft, for one, and two, that it’s not Amelia’s aircraft.

“There’s no other known crashes in the area, and certainly not of that era in that kind of design with the tail that you see clearly in the image.”

Mr Romeo’s team plan to return to the site this year or early next year with a camera and a drone to investigate further.

“The next step is confirmation, and there’s a lot we need to know about it. And it looks like there’s some damage. I mean, it’s been sitting there for 87 years at this point,” he said.

In his last voyage, the team used an unmanned submersible to scan 5,200 square miles of ocean floor.

The image of the suspected plane was found resting 5,000m underwater, according to the Wall St Journal.

“I think myself that it is the great mystery of all time,” Mr Romeo said. “Certainly the most enduring aviation mystery of all time.”

Merger between Amazon and Roomba maker iRobot abandoned over competition concerns | Business News

Plans by Amazon and vacuum cleaner maker iRobot to merge have been abandoned following concerns that the move would harm competition.

The $1.4bn (£1.1bn) deal, which was first announced in August 2022, had previously been approved by UK regulators.

But in November the European Commission expressed concerns the online retailer might give iRobot’s products preferential treatment on its website – ahead of rival vacuum companies – if the merger went ahead.

Amazon confirmed on Monday that the deal had now collapsed after it failed to find a way forward with EU officials during talks.

The merger had also been facing scrutiny from regulators in the US. A source told Reuters news agency following Monday’s announcement that the Federal Trade Commission had been “poised” to reject the deal.

Amazon’s senior vice president David Zapolsky said: “We’re disappointed that Amazon’s acquisition of iRobot could not proceed.

“We’re believers in the future of consumer robotics in the home and have always been fans of iRobot’s products.”

He added: “This outcome will deny consumers faster innovation and more competitive prices, which we’re confident would have made their lives easier and more enjoyable.”

Amazon, which already owns “smart” products such as Alexa and Ring, had been looking to expand its range of home tech devices.

The collapse of the deal is a major setback for iRobot, which is best known for its Roomba range of circular vacuum cleaners.

It announced a restructuring plan to reduce costs, including 350 job cuts, while the firm’s founder Colin Angle also said he was stepping down as its chief executive.

Mr Angle said he and the board “mutually decided that iRobot will be better served by a new leader with turnaround experience.”

However, Amazon will still pay the firm a previously-agreed $94m (£74m) termination fee.

In its decision to approve the deal last June, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority said the market for robot vacuum cleaners in Britain was “small,” with demand “significantly” below the levels seen in parts of mainland Europe and the US.

The regulator said that while Amazon did have the ability to harm iRobot’s rivals via its website, it did not have the incentive to do so.
